Melayu Boleh: A Paradigm Shift
The term ‘Melayu Boleh’ possibly derived from ‘Malaysia Boleh!’ campaign, a national move towards a strong can-do attitude in every Malaysians mind. However ‘Melayu Boleh’ to most, if not all, Malaysia online community is nothing new linked to a bad image of our nation. For years, a search with the term will return a long list of dirty websites providing access to pornographic materials; mostly in pictures or stories, better known as ‘gambar lucah’ or ‘cerita seks’ in Bahasa.
“The keyword is hitting the highest searchs from South East Asia (particularly for Malaysia and Singapore)”, a moderator of one of local online communities said. The community, WangCyber.com, is now in a race of top SERP of Google and Yahoo which offering RM100 cash prize for the winner.
It is good to have this kind of challenge, well at least, to preserve the real meaning of Melayu Boleh. WangCyber challenge in the end, is expected to turn the result of ‘Melayu Boleh’ at Google and Yahoo to the community’s own portal page, followed by some participants websites or blogs, depending on how many of them are in the challenge. It might not be the best results, but sure better than porn materials.
