Internet Access without Streamyx
->
We all know how desperate it is without internet access. Life will be so dumb and the TV will be your best entertainment ever.
I just moved to a new housing area where no fixed line telephone is available. But I have tried few alternatives;
1. Using Celcom GPRS - some town guys might be very happy to be using the Celcom 3G but GPRS is the only choice here. It’s not quite happy experience to use it due to a very slow connection - i can say about 20kbps. It just does not worth the RM0.10 per 10kb of data.
2. Using Celcom network, but dial to Time ISP server. Be sure to have the local number nearest to your place so you will be charged for local call only. The internet access account is free. The number should be 03xxxxyyyy or whatever area code you are in.
3. Using Celcom network, but dial to 1515. No you don’t
- it does not work, i’ve tried it.
4. Using DiGi GPRS/Edge - I bought RM10 sim card for a trial but did not manage to get it working too. Maybe something wrong with my phone configuration - the ‘access point’ part. DiGi lost a very honest potential postpaid subscriber due to that.
5. Using Maxis 3G, they claimed they have broad coverage but I found they only serve JB, KL & Penang.
6. Using Telekom mobile CDMA. It works well with Nokia 2112 (CDMA) and it gives me 170kbps speed during a test at Simple Nasi Lemak Kuantan, not bad. But my new housing area is so special even the Nokia 2112 only receive low signal and drop any data calls. Some people say you may get 200kbps with Nokia 2880 or Hua Wei.
7. Using Telekom Fixed Wireless Telephone (FWT) - it just another CDMA that comes with a special phone set for home users. The manual says to fix the baudrate at 115200bps but I the connection dropped at every minutes. So I change it to 19200bps, and I manage to write this entry with it.
